Nestled within a tranquil valley on the Somerset and Wiltshire border, Iford Manor Gardens offers a masterclass in landscape design, seamlessly blending natural British beauty with classical architecture. A short visit to this idyllic estate reveals a hidden world of romantic terraces, sweeping views and carefully curated vistas that feel entirely removed from the haste of modern life.

As James, with his landscape architect's training, pointed out, the true magic of Iford lies in its layout. As one wanders through the grounds, it becomes clear that the garden is not a single expansive space, but rather a series of beautifully interconnected rooms. Each pathway leads to a new discovery, drawing the visitor deeper into the landscape. Among the most enchanting features is a serene pond framed by cascading wisteria.

The vibrant blooms draping over the water create a picturesque scene, offering a moment of quiet contemplation and showcasing the harmony between the architectural water features and the surrounding flora.

The unique character of the garden is largely the work of Harold Peto, an acclaimed Edwardian landscape architect who made Iford Manor his home. Peto had a profound love for Italy and classical antiquity, which is evident in the remarkable collection of Italianate columns, statues and ancient fragments dotted throughout the grounds. These historic follies add a sense of grandeur and timelessness to the estate. One of the most striking features is the magnificent Italian courtyard, a design element rarely encountered in traditional British gardens. It stands as a stunning testament to Peto's vision, transporting visitors directly to the hills of Tuscany.

During the visit, the garden was alive with colour, and it was impossible not to notice the deliberate and thoughtful choice of flora. The planting scheme definitely leans into shades of purple, with delicate hues woven masterfully across the terraces and borders. This cohesive palette enhances the romantic atmosphere of the grounds, unifying the diverse plants under a shared aesthetic theme.

To conclude the afternoon, a visit to the onsite restaurant proved to be an exceptional highlight. The meal was simply stunning, featuring expertly prepared dishes that celebrated seasonal flavours. The restaurant exudes a welcoming charm, making it an ideal destination to return to with friends for a relaxed dining experience with excellent food. Combining historical grandeur with superb hospitality, Iford Manor is a destination that lingers in the memory long after the visit has ended.
